FAQs

Q: What is the difference between the non-competitive medical sports certificate (certificato medico non-agonistico) and the competitive medical sports certificate (certificato medico sportivo agonistico)?

A: If you need a medical sports certificate, this is one of the first things you'll need to understand. Ask the requesting organization which one they require for you to take part in the activity.

The non-competitive sports certificate is for participation in amateur sports to complete physical activity with a gym, public pool, or other fitness clubs and organizations, for children's school sporting activities, or for non-competitive sporting events. All gyms and organizations registered with the Italian National Sports Federation (CONI) must have a non-competitive sports certificate for participation. The certificate has a validity of one year.

This exam is comprised of:

  • Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG)

  • Blood pressure check

  • Basic physical examination

The competitive sports certificate is for participation in intense competitive sports and can be performed by a medical sports doctor or--for professional athletes--through the medical office of the athletics association with which the compete. These include sporting activities organized by the CONI, the Italian Track and Field Federation (FIDAL). Some events may require participants to become members of the CONI, FIDAL, or other relevant sporting organizations.

Each certificate is tailored to the type of sport requested, so be sure to specify this to your medical professional during the booking and visit. The certificate generally has a vailidity of one year, but for less intense sports it may be valid for two years.

This exam includes:

  • Stress test with an EKG/ECG

  • Blood pressure check

  • Urine test (to be completed in a laboratory)

  • Detailed physical examination
