What to expect at your otolaryngology visit:

Otolaryngology deals with disorders that involve the head and neck. Your ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor can treat issues that range from a simple earwax cleaning to more serious conditions that require head or neck surgery.

The doctor will speak with you about any relevant medical or family history you may have and then evaluate your symptoms based on your description and the physical examination. Be sure to mention any medications you take that may affect your issues directly or as a side effect.

If necessary, the doctor will also complete or schedule a procedure or give you a prescription to alleviate your symptoms or treat your condition. The doctor may also prescribe a follow-up visit to see whether your therapy has worked correctly.

Why it’s important to see an ENT:

Taste, smell and sound are three senses that we generally take for granted, however when one of these senses is affected, it can greatly impact our quality of life. ENTs deal with these issues and more. If you have a problem that affects your head or neck, whether it has to do with congenital or inflammatory issues, respiratory conditions or esophageal and voice problems, our doctor will take care of you.

What should I do if...?

FirstMed's ENT services are quite comprehensive, but we understand that you may have some questions regarding how to get an ENT visit in Rome. Here are a few points you may be wondering about for ENT consultation in Italy.

Q: Can the ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor make a home/hotel visit?

A: Yes, we can set up a home visit service depending on your symptoms. If you would prefer the ENT doctor to come to your home/hotel, all you need to do is to tell us your symptoms and preference in your request. FirstMed 24/7 customer support will help you connect with your doctor.

Q: Will the ENT doctor prescribe me medication?

A: If you are already taking any ENT medications, you and the doctor can evaluate the options for a renewed or new prescription. Talk with the ENT doctor about your concerns and, if you're interested, ask if there are any alternatives to get the best array of your choices.

Q: When should I see the ENT doctor for an ear infection?

A: You should seek out medical attention for an ear infection if you have pain, fever, discharge coming from the ear and if your symptoms do not disappear within 1-3 days. Also it is important to see the ENT doctor if you have frequent ear infections that occur one after another. This may even lead to loss of hearing.

Q: When should I see the ENT doctor for throat issues?

A: You should see the ENT doctor if you have pain, inflammation and visible white spots on the tissue of the throat and tonsils or if you are struggling to swallow, or find that swallowing is uncomfortable, then an ENT is the right specialist to contact. Or else if you have lost your voice, an ENT can help to establish the cause and help you find a solution.

Q: I experience frequent sinus infections. Is this normal?

A: While the very occasional sinus infection (sinusitis) is relatively normal, recurrent or chronic sinus infections are not. There could be several reasons why you keep getting sinus infections. In this case, it is important to see an ENT doctor.

Q: How much does the otolaryngology visit cost?

A: A typical ENT visit is €150.00 with FirstMed Personal Value Card (discount card) for cash payers.
