What to Expect at your Orthopedic Consultation

The duration of your orthopedic visit will vary based on your specific concerns and the types of problems you're experiencing, typically lasting around 30 minutes. During your appointment, our orthopedic specialist will carefully evaluate your areas of concern as you describe your pain.

Common tests conducted during orthopedic assessments may include:

  • A thorough physical examination

  • An X-ray

  • An ultrasound

  • Review of your medical history

  • Additional clinical tests if necessary

Your orthopedic specialist may ask you to perform several physical activities during the visit. This physical exam will help your doctor assess the condition of your hips, knees, and ankles, taking note of their size and length, strength, swelling, and reflexes.

Following the physical evaluation, an X-ray may be ordered as the next step in reaching a diagnosis. In some cases, further tests like MRI may be needed to ensure an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Q&A

Can an orthopedic surgeon see my child?

Absolutely! Our orthopedic surgeon is experienced in managing children and adolescents. Your child's health and well-being are our top priority, and we are committed to ensuring that they receive the most suitable and compassionate care possible.

Can you perform X-ray on the same day?

We offer same-day availability for X-rays. If your doctor prescribes an X-ray during your visit, rest assured that we can accommodate this service either during or after your appointment.

Can I see an Orthopedic Surgeon near me same day or after hours?

At FirstMed, we understand the importance of quick access to healthcare services. While we offer a rapid way to schedule appointments with English-speaking orthopedic surgeons, it's essential to note that it is not a substitute for trauma emergency centers and is not suitable for emergency situations that could be life-threatening.

When you reach out to us, your request promptly reaches our Customer Service department, ensuring timely responses. They will propose convenient appointment times based on the doctors' availability, allowing you to choose the first option that suits you.

What happens if I need to get a cast or get a cast removed?

Before applying a cast, it's essential to have an X-ray taken. An X-ray provides your doctor with a detailed view of your bones, helping them determine the right type of cast for your needs. This step is crucial for ensuring the best care for your injury.

Once the X-ray is reviewed and a proper examination is conducted, a healthcare provider will expertly apply the cast to your body in layers. This process is carefully done to support and protect the injured area as it heals, promoting a smooth recovery.

Then you will need to come back when you need your cast to be taken off or changed.

What happens if I need to have an orthopedic surgery?

Before proceeding with any surgical intervention, your orthopedic surgeon will begin by thoroughly examining you, conducting a detailed consultation, and reviewing any imaging studies you may have, such as x-rays, MRI, CT scans, or ultrasounds. This collaborative process ensures that we have a clear understanding of your condition and can devise the most effective treatment plan tailored to you.

Together, we will discuss your case in detail, allowing you to actively participate in the decision-making process regarding your care. Then you can book the hospital admission. While urgent cases can progress swiftly, more complex or planned procedures like ACL reconstruction, hip replacement, or implant replacement may take a few days or weeks from the first consultation to the surgery.

Can the orthopedist give me a prescription?

When you receive a prescription from our orthopedic doctor, it will be a signed paper document that you can fill at any pharmacy.

Although the boxes and instructions on medications may be in Italian, rest assured that your doctor speaks English fluently and will be happy to help explain precisely how to take the medication. It can be helpful to take notes during this discussion to avoid confusion and ensure that you have all the information you need.
